Localism: The Good Kind | A Gallery & Slideshow by Blarrel
August 21st, 2018
On Saturday, August 18th 2018, I went through the hundreds of thousands of photos I've taken in the past few years and (with thanks to Ego id Media, a print lab in San Diego) I printed a bunch of my work to display at the Misfit Pictures HQ in La Jolla.
Along with complimentary beer on tap from my friends at Duckfoot Brewing and some good vibes, friends from all around began to poor in. It was such a treat to be able to talk to surfers, surf photographers, coworkers, customers from work, scientists, new faces, and old friends all about the shots that I've taken throughout the years and share the stoke.
I'm not much of a public speaker, nor do I do much presenting, but I decided to go into detail of how I grew up and how I got into such an awesome hobby and career. Going through my travels and the shots I took along the way was great. I have had some lows in the past, but by being able to be here today and present my work in front of such a fun crowd made me feel that every single step along the way was worth it. It also made me appreciate some of my work even more, even some of the shots I never really cared for.
A ton of my prints left the house that night to go to new homes. The silent auction for the larger metal prints went amazing as well. Most importantly, the community that showed such a a stoke and appreciation for my work has motivated me to push even farther. I have a long way to go and still have much to work on. With a possible surf-heavy year upon us, I'm beyond optimistic and stoked for what's to come.
Thank you to each and every single person who has supported me on my surf photography journey thus far. I will always be working harder and harder to create what I love and there still is much to be seen. Until next time, see you out there!
